From Boots to Beyond: How an NCC Drone Camp at IIT Roorkee Redefined My Engineering Vision
By Adityaveer Singh Chauhan | 2nd Year B.Tech, Civil Engineering, IIT Roorkee
Scholar, Blogger, Artist, & Social Activist
When we think of an NCC camp, the mind instantly paints a vivid picture of strict discipline,
crisp uniforms, exact codes of conduct, and rigorous PT drills under the morning sun. While my
recent experience at the NCC Camp hosted right here at IIT Roorkee from May 28th till June 6th,
2026, delivered all of that classic grit, it also pushed past traditional boundaries, launching us
directly into the future of technology: aviation and drone engineering.
Enrolling in the specialized drone course was a defining turn. Beyond the foundational firing
rounds and traditional map-reading modules, we jumped deep into drone flying, assembly, and
tent pitching. We were not merely passive observers; we were handed official Army RC
transmitters, executing precision macro-movements and feeling the weight of absolute control.
Stripping down and reassembling complex drone components gave me a profound, hands-on
appreciation for the mechanics of flight.
"The camp bridged the gap between raw military discipline and modern technological strategy,
turning abstract engineering concepts into real-world applications."
What truly elevated this camp was the extraordinary exposure. We participated in direct, intense
interactions with trained Army and Air Force officers, alongside top officials from the Indian
Military Academy (IMA). These mentors did not just teach; they addressed our deepest
curiosities, ensuring a rich environment of deep learning throughout. They showed us how
drone technology is actively reshaping modern defense, surveillance, and civil infrastructure.
The course concluded with a high-stakes pre-certificate examination. This was no ordinary
assessment—it featured a written exam, a grueling 20-minute intense drone-flying session, and a
rigorous, detailed viva focusing on drone parts and operational experiences. Walking away with
a formal certification from the Office of the Director, DGCA, felt like earning a badge of futurereadiness.
As a civil engineering student, an artist, and a social activist, this camp cracked open a new
perspective. Drones are no longer just toys or high-tech defense tools; they are the future of
structural mapping, disaster management, and community service. This experience proved that
when military precision meets IIT-level innovation, the sky isn't the limit—it's just the starting
point.
